Social Media’s Negative Effects on Society

Social media is something that is commonly used among many different age groups and different types of people. There are a variety of types of social media apps and websites, all made to allow people to share information and personal interests. Some of those apps and websites include Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, and many more. However, no matter how many social media sites are available, it seems as though they do more harm than good. Ever since social media became huge among all age groups, new problems and fears rise among parents and the people who use the sites. Things like increased stalking, fake news, cyberbullying, and many more troubles occur, all due to social media.

Social media seems to be causing a lot of fear within people and the way others use these apps. Things like stalking, kidnapping, and catfishing, just to name a few, have become more easy for people to do. In an article written by Rachel Ehmke, she writes, “Another big change that has come with new technology and especially smartphones is that we are never really alone. Kids update their status, share what they’re watching, listening to, and reading, and have apps that let their friends know their specific location on a map at all times” (“How Using Social Media Affects Teenagers”). Many kids do not understand how easy someone can find them or find out almost everything that they are doing. People posting all about there life and revealing personal information makes it easier for someone to stalk them. Not only is stalking a major uprising of social media but so is catfishing. Catfishing is where someone poses as another person online and many people would not know they are lying. Things like catfishing can grab someone’s attention and lead to even more serious things like kidnapping. Not only is stalking an increasing problem due to social media, but fake news spreading has also become a major problem as well.

Fake news seems to be a term that many people are familiar to today. From celebrities to politicians, fake news is spread about anyone or anything, all on social media apps. Fake news is when false or untrue information is shared with the public. In an AACE review titled “Social Media and Fake News”, it states, “Websites containing hoaxes and misleading information pop up across the Internet and are often shared on social media to increase their reach – by both human users and artificial bots, deliberately or unintentionally spreading disinformation” (Stefanie Panke).

News, False, Concept, Information, Text, Background
Fake news can appear anywhere

Fake news can cause people to freak out, get scared, spread rumors, and much more all without knowing the truth. However, some people who believe social media is a good thing will say that social media helps spread good information that many other people can learn from. Many people would say that social media can spread awareness of a good cause or it can even help someone in need. Even though some good news is shared on these apps, the amount of fake and harmful news shared is much more significant. In the same AACE review, Panke states, “A recent scare went through social media, particularly in parenting circles: Momo, an alleged social media meme, supposedly targeted children and adolescents to commit acts of violence or self-harm, either through a gamified challenge or subliminal messages in youtube videos” (Social Media and Fake News”). A massive increase in things like the Momo Challenge has occurred all due to the way social media allows fake news to be spread so quickly. However, fake news isn’t even the worst thing about social media. Fake news and stalking have seen a major increase due to social media usage, but one of the worst increases by far is cyberbullying.

Stop all types of bullying (cyberbullying included)

Social media has caused a lot of problems over the years, but one of the worst problems by far has to be cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is almost the same as regular bullying in the sense where someone is harassed or abused by another, except everything is online. In an article titled Benefits and Costs of Social Media in Adolescence”, it states, “Research found that online bullying often displayed through social media, is associated with more depressive symptoms than traditional bullying” (Yalda Uhls, Nicole Ellison, Kaveri Subrahmanyam). Cyberbullying is a thing that many kids, teens, and sometimes even adults have to experience. Cyberbullying allows the bully to be anonymous and that can make it easier for them to say more hurtful things which can lower one’s self-esteem. However, many people would argue that social media can actually boost someone’s self-esteem when they receive nice comments from friends and family. Even though nice comments and nice posts are shared, the amount of bad and harmful comments overrule the good ones. In the same article, “Benefits and Costs of Social Media in Adolescence”, it says, “A recent study found that risky online self-presentation increased the likelihood of receiving negative online feedback on social media” (Yalda Uhls, Nicole Ellison, Kaveri Subrahmanyam). It is sad to see that when someone posts something online others can comment hurtful things to destroy another’s self-esteem. Cyberbullying is becoming worse the more kids realize that it is a thing. In some horrible cases, some people even commit suicide over those hurtful messages. If social media never existed, maybe cyberbullying would not be a thing too.

Overall, ever since social media became popular among all age groups, the number of problems in the world has seemed to go up. Problems like stalking and catfishing can lead to kidnapping. Fake news that can be easily spread can turn into fear and cause people to freak out. Something like cyberbullying can cause someone to take their own life. These problems have shown that social media has done more harm then it has ever done any good for our world. If social media was never invented, many of these problems would not exist as well.

Romeo and Juliet-Love, Rebellion, Responsibility BP2

First Impressions- (Acts 2-3)

The play Romeo and Juliet is about how two star-crossed lovers fall in love but have to keep their relationship a secret because their families are enemies. Acts 2-3 are about how Romeo and Juliet are trying to secure their marriage while still keeping it a secret. In Act 3, a big fight breaks out and Mercutio (a Montague) and Tybalt (a Capulet) are pronounced dead. Soon, Romeo is banished from the town while still trying to be with Juliet.

Mercutio vs Tybalt

In only a few acts, a lot has happened in the Romeo and Juliet play. One part that I found was pretty exciting was when Mercutio and Tybalt were fighting and later when Tybalt and Romeo were fighting. Something that I found that was pretty questionable would be when Juliet says she would rather have like 1,000 more killed Tybalt’s (her own family) than to be without Romeo. I still just do not understand why Juliet was willing to give up her family name for someone she just met, the same goes for Romeo as well.

The whole love at first sight idea has come a long way in the play. This idea of love at first sight is progressing in such a fast way already Romeo and Juliet confessed their love for each other and are about to get married. Not only did they do that, but Romeo and Juliet are willing to give up their families names in order for them to be together.

One question that my classmates and I came up with before reading the play was, does not at first go both ways (do both people feel the same way)? Since we started reading the play, I can confirm that love at first sight can go both ways. Right away, both Romeo and Juliet confessed their love for each other and wanted to get married. This was right after they saw each other at the Capulet party. This shows that love at first can go both ways, but it might not always be the case.

In the play, many things have happened without a clear understanding of who is responsible for them. I believe that Romeo is responsible for many things like deaths, character developments, and many more. For example, if Romeo decided to fight Tybalt in the first place maybe no one would have died. Also, maybe if Romeo didn’t get over Roseline so fast, many other events that followed would not have happened.

Juliet + Hate- (Character Analysis)

Image result for romeo under the balcony

In acts 2-3, Juliet shows a lot of hate as her character is played out. She mostly shows her love for Romeo as she is not expressed as much as Romeo was. However, she shows hatred in many parts like when she first realizes Romeo is listening to her thoughts to when Romeo is banished from killing Tybalt.

Say Mean Matter

  1. “What man art thou that, thus bescreened in night, So stumblest on my counsel?” (2.2.52-54).
  2.  “That ‘banished’, that one word ‘banished’ Hath slain ten thousand Tybalts” (3.2.114-115).

1. In this scene, she finds out that someone (Romeo) was listening to her private thoughts (about Romeo) and gets angry that they heard her.

2. In this scene, she hates Tybalt for starting the fight and she hates that Romeo is banished from her town.

1. This provides evidence as to why Juliet was so angry at first when she found out that Romeo was listening to her thoughts.

2. This provides evidence as to why Juliet was so angry while talking to her Nurse about the fight and Romeo’s banishment.

Mercutio vs. Tybalt-

In Act 3 scene 1, Mercutio and Tybalt fight. At first, Romeo is challenged by Tybalt but says, “Tybalt, the reason that I have to love thee Doth much excuse the appertaining rage To such a greeting. Villain am I none. Therefore, farewell. I see thou know’st me not” (3.1.48-36). Since Romeo does not want to fight Tybalt, Mercutio takes his place in battle. Mercutio is then hurt and later dies because of Tybalt.

Tybalt challenging Mercutio

Who is the blame for their fight? It is not clear however, there are many different ideas on what or who is to blame. At first, I strongly believed Romeo was to blame for the fight. Maybe if Romeo fought Tybalt in the first place no one would have died. Maybe if Romeo fought he could have tried to calm Tybalt down. However, after hearing other peers opinions, I now feel that hatred between the two families is to blame. If there was no hatred, no one would have fought to begin with meaning that no one would have died.

Why might Shakespeare have killed them both off so quickly? This question confused me very much. I do not understand why Shakespeare would kill off the characters so quickly since one was known for his wits (Mercutio) and the other for his intensity (Tybalt). However, I feel as though Shakespeare killed them off so easily because it gives the play more suspense and adds more drama.

Zeffirelli vs. Luhrman-

In class, we watched both versions of the Mercutio vs Tybalt scene. Each movie captured the hatred between them in different ways. In Zeffirelli’s version, Mercutio was wittier and kind of making a joke of things. It kind lighted the mood even after Tybalt was very angry and wanted to fight. Luhrman’s version was much more serious while Mercutio and Tybalt were talking. There was no remorse and things were much more brutal showing more hatred between the two.

Shows closer up camera work

Not only was the way the scenes were played out different but also the camera work involved was different too. In Zeffirelli’s version, the camera work was shot from farther away, following the bodies of the two men fighting. In Luhrman’s version, the camera work was much closer to the actors facing making it seem more intense and more fast-paced.

Even the character development was different between the two movies. In Zeffirelli’s version, the characters seemed more relaxed like they were just talking to each other and not fighting at all. In Luhrman’s version, the characters showed more emotion and the scenes were more advance and real looking, especially when they were fighting. Luhrman’s version, to me, felt more compelling and it moved in into believing that the fight was actually happening.

Romeo & Juliet-Star Crossed Lovers BP1

Welcome to my blog. This section will be all about Romeo and Juliet. Hope you enjoy!

First Impressions-

From what my English class and I have read so far, Romeo and Juliet were what I was expecting. What pleased me while reading Romeo and Juliet was the creative difference that was written in the story. I know, however, that in that time this piece was not considered to be “different”, but since times have changed it does feel a lot different when read.

The most difficult thing to understand, besides the language, was the ideas that Shakespeare put all together. It is hard to understand how someone, Romeo, can go from being madly in love with one girl, Rosaline, to being married to someone else the next day. Things like this usually do not happen in today’s world, which makes the ideas and plots a little hard to understand.

Love at First Sight?-

Love, at first sight, can be very complicated and can mean different things to different people. Love at first sight to one person could mean just looking at someone else’s appearance. While someone else could think love, at first sight, is after you get to know someone and then realize that you loved them when you first meet them. Some people may think love, at first sight, is stupid, while others might think it is wonderful.

In the story of Romeo and Julietlove, at first sight, has already taken place. In act one is were Romeo goes to the Capulet party and sees Juliet. Once they see each other, they fall in love right away and kiss. They soon realize that they can not be together but that does not stop them from trying. In the play, Romeo says, “Sin from my lips? O trespass sweetly urged! Give me my sin again” (Shakespeare 1.5.120-121). Romeo says this after their first kiss because he realizes that they are not supposed to be together, so he calls there kiss a “sin”.

Juliet’s Hate-

In my English class, I was asked to map out the character Juliet. At the beginning of the story, her parents are trying to force her to marry someone she does not want to marry. Juliet states, “I’ll look to like, if looking liking move..” (Shakespeare 1.3.106). When she says this, she is implying that she doesn’t want to marry Paris. However, she says that she will pretend to like him if she really has to. She ends up meeting Romeo and breaks the rules to be with him instead.

Not only was I asked to map out Juliet’s character, but also the hate side that is present in the story. Her hatred shapes her character because it allows her to want to break her parents wanting her getting married to Paris. In fact, at first, she does not want to get married at all. Juliet says, “It is an honor that I dream not of” (Shakespeare 1.3.72). Having this hatred for not wanting to get married to Paris, gives her the willingness to break the rules and seek love for Romeo instead.

The chart we used in class-

Say Mean Matter
1. “It is an honor that I dream not of.”

2. “I’ll look to like, if looking liking move..”

1. She does not want to get married right now because she is still young.

2. She does not like Paris. but is willing to pretend she does to make her parents happy.

1. Proves that Juliet doesn’t want to get married to Paris, but her parents are forcing her.

2. Proves that Juliet is hating her parents/Paris for making her get married, but she is willing to follow along (for now).

Compare and Contrast-

There are many different versions of Romeo and Juliet. Two versions that we compared in the class were Zeffirelli and Luhrman’s Romeo and Juliet’s. We compared the scenes when Romeo and Juliet first see each other. These two scenes are very different in many different ways.

Capulet’s vs. Montague’s

In Zeffirelli’s scene, it is more of the original Romeo and Juliet. It is set at a Capulet party and Romeo sees Juliet while she is dancing in an oldish fashioned way. Not only was the dancing old timely, but the music, costumes, and props used in this scene were things you would have seen years ago. The background looked castle-like and not as clean or modern. The words used were not changed in any way and the acting was not as advanced as people would see today.

Unlike Zeffirelli’s, Luhrman’s scene, it is more unique and modernized. It is set at a Capulet costume party and Romeo sees Juliet through a fish tank. Everything in this scene was more modern including a little upbeat music, modernized costumes, and props that many people would be familiar with today. The background looked more like a mansion, it was clean and a lot better looking. The scene also contained an elevator, which was not seen back then. Some words were changed, but not by much and the acting was a lot more advanced like people would see today.

Romeo and Juliet and Me?

In the story of Romeo and Juliet, one character calls dreams “The children of an idle brain”. I understand dreams to be images and thoughts coming into our heads while we sleep.

Image result for dreams
Dreams can be all sorts of ideas.

They may or may not come true in real life, but usually if they come true it may not be the full dream. I do remember having a dream that I felt like came to life. I do not remember the exact dream or what happened, but I know that when it happened it felt weird. I felt like I went back in time and re-lived this moment. Kind of like having deja vu, but you know what it is from.

Some parts from the dream did come true, but not all parts. I do not think the dream changed my behavior because in my dream I was acting the same I would have in real life. Dreams, I feel like, do not change people’s behavior. Dreams just put people in a situation that may not happen in real life.

I believe our dreams can teach us things. Depending on they try of dream it they can teach us a load of different things. For example, if you have a dream about being in the woods alone, it can teach you survival tactics and things like that. I can not recall a dream that helped me understand something, but I am sure that there was a dream that helped me.

Anthem Blog Post

The story Anthem by Ayn Rand is about a man named Equality 7-2521 and how in his society ever man is equal. Right away there was something different about him. He was not like his other brothers. Throughout the story Equality realizes that it is okay to be different and that there is no such this as everyone being equal.

I think the book was very interesting in all aspects of writing, especially the grammar. When Ayn Rand uses “we” instead of “I” to indicate one person it can get a little confusing. However, the more you read, the easier it is to understand why she wrote the book in this way.

To go along with the “I” and “we” concept, it makes the reader understand why everyone is considered equal in that society. The story is resembling a communist society where everyone is equal and no one human is greater than another. Using “we” shows that whatever someone does it is not just that person, all men are involved. This is how the book dealt with the theme of the individual vs the collective.

Hero’s Journey-

“My philosophy is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute truth.” Ayn Rand.

In Anthem Equality 7-2521 realizes his differences and he is a heroic being who held his happiness and achievements as the greatest purpose in his life, beyond that of any responsibility the collective may have forced upon him.

For example, in the text it says, “We seized our box, we shoved them aside, and we ran to the window…We fell, but we never let the box fall from our hands. Then we ran.” This shows when Equality holds onto his achievements and decided to keep his creation for himself, since no one else wanted it. He choose the individual over the collective which is a heroic thing to do in this type of society.

Another example is that, in the text it states, “We made it.We created it. We brought it forth from the night of the ages. We alone. Our hands. Our mind. Ours alone and only.” This is when he finished his creation before showing it to the Council of Scholars. Equality holds onto his happiness of creating a things that can benefit mean men. Even though it is forbidden to sneak away into his tunnel it is still his happiness that over ruled the collective society.

What Anthem Taught me-

Anthem has taught me to be myself and go for what I believe in no matter how hard, how unusual, or how many people will try and tear me down. It makes me believe that I can have my own hero’s journey story about my life and what I have been though to overcome certain obstacles.

I could see myself acting as Equality and Liberty did. I would not want to live in a world where even my own personal thoughts were considered sinful. I like freedom to be how I am and do things on my own. I do believe everyone is different in their own way and that’s why we are here in life.

I probably would have done the same thing and Equality and Liberty did. I do not think I have done anything considered to be a journey like this yet,but maybe in the future it could happen.

In this situation I probably would not have held back much. I can see why it is hard to leave something you have known you whole life, but it gets to a point where things need to change.
